If you wanted to know about things and places that disappeared from Belgrade during these transitioning years, (or will disappear sometime soon) you’d probably turn to us locals. But after more than seven years he’s here, Michael Bowring is no stranger to Belgrade. In his Disappearing Belgrade series, he shows some of those things that used to be a part of Belgrade’s (sub)culture. Here is an excerpt:

One of the more exciting news recently, is Nemanja‘s first self-printed and self-published photobook, with photos from his trip to America, titled ACDCNYC. His exhibition in KC GRAD is still open, so if you’re around don’t forget to drop by. I have a strange feeling like we’re saying this every time, but there’s some more traveling going on: Andrej is off to Vienna (again!), and Luka returned from his trip to Norway. Let’s hope they’ll share some pictures soon!

Three months of our weekly photo blog! Time flies, that’s for sure.

Lately we’ve been busy preparing our first table-book, and soon you’ll be able to see it in KC GRAD, the best multifunctional space in Belgrade. Also, we were interviewed for Radio 202, so if you understand Serbian, click to listen.

Gazela youngsters

So called “Cardboard City” was a slum settlement located under Gazela bridge in Belgrade. First Roma families moved in over twenty years ago, and by the 2007, almost a thousand people were living in houses made of cardboard, plywood, metal and plastic sheets. In the past few years, local government had a few unsuccessful attempts to relocate the settlement. Finally, on 31. August 2009, all families were moved to other parts of Belgrade and Serbia, and entire area flattened by bulldozers. (see my video clip)

This short series is about young people who were born and raised under Gazela bridge. My motivation was to show that all those things we, as complete strangers take as an extreme about Roma – garbage, dirty clothes, poorly built houses and so on – is in fact just a cover. A cliché trap. (example here) But if we choose to go further inside, we will see a real community, a real life. I’ve spent some time with those young people and I came to admire some daily little things, like a boy repairing a bicycle, another boy with a curly blond haircut, or wearing fancy underwear. I have combined photos as diptychs, to try to provide some context.

All photographs were shot few days before the settlement was relocated. The series has just won “special jury award” at Press Photo Serbia 2010. Big thanks to Matt Lutton and Sanja Knežević, for helping me out.

Choosing from the photographs for this week’s photo blog, I strongly felt like I was watching scenes from different movies, even more so than usually. So, I wanted to share some of my “plots”, but thought that would be too literal. Then, I got another idea – I’ll give you the soundtracks. Yes, I know – I hate music on photography sites too. But I think in this case it adds to the atmosphere of each one.

I’ve embedded the soundtracks here, so each of four tracks relates to its photo. You don’t need to play the entire song, around a minute is enough. I hope you’ll enjoy it – all comments appreciated!

Winter’s coming to an end, it seems. It was both fun and terrible, but we keep on rolling. Which reminds me – take a look at this strange concrete object. (located next to a Roma settlement) Just had an idea of turning it into a rolling panoramic camera obscura!

Happy Valentine’s Day from Belgrade Raw

Supporting each other is the key principle of Belgrade Raw cooperative. Here you can see how Milovan helps Nemanja make photos look more spontaneous.

Today we were scouting locations for our project, (more info in March!) but since it also happens to be the Valentine’s Day (ser. Dan Zaljubljenih) we decided to share a few words and pictures.

Although traffic collapsed in Belgrade yesterday (and entire Serbia) due to a high amount of snow which fell Friday night, this Valentine’s Day was definitely a hit. Especially at Kalemegdan fortress. Lighting was just perfect – soft and diffuse, and there was a plenty of snow. Just look at those cute snowmen!

Too bad the snow will probably melt in a day or two, I’d love to contribute with my own snowman! Or snowmonster. Until then, here’s your Valentine’s Day greeting from Belgrade! I just couldn’t resist taking this picture. It was such an easy take, almost a cliche minimalist snap. But I like it’s lonely lovers lost somewhere atmosphere. Well, Happy Valentine’s!

Luna

Luna is the name of many amusement parks today. Big colorful machines look quite naive during the day, but as the dark falls, they wake up and their real power comes to life. Flashy lights, claw-like seats and all the sounds which finally hipnotize their visitors completely. From naive, funny machines during the day, to nightly beasts turning their victims into faceless silhouettes, Luna is a powerful system offering surreal alternative fun to a family which in modern society doesn’t have time or money to think of a better one.
